‘Healthy foods’ that are actually damaging your health

There are hundreds of so-called ‘healthy foods’ on the supermarket shelves that are full of harmful fats. These oils (called Omega-6 fats) damage our cells and wreak havoc on our hormones, making it difficult for you to lose weight, avoid disease and appear youthful (not kidding, inflammation doesn't bode well for your glow)!

It’s not as though you can never eat these oils. However, our bodies struggle to burn them and they can build up in your fat over time. So the occasional food containing these oils is no problem….but eating them in everything all the time, matters! Over the last 50 years, the use of these oils have skyrocketed and now account for 80% of our fat consumption!

If you aren’t reading ingredient lists regularly, I guarantee you are eating these undesirable oils more often than you think.

Oils you want to ditch are: soybean, canola, safflower, sunflower, peanut, corn, cottonseed and grape-seed oils.

Check out these common ‘everyday’ foods that often contain these unhealthy fats:

  1. Nut Butters - look at ingredient list and choose one with only nuts

  2. Salad dressings and mayonnaise - look for brands like Chosen Foods or Primal Kitchen. Or make your own!

  3. Bagged popcorn and veggie straws - try air popping your own and add butter, salt

  4. Trail mix - consider buying plain nuts and seeds, coconut, raisins to make your own

  5. Bagged french fries - cut up your own potatoes, sprinkle with avocado oil, salt and bake

  6. Chicken fingers - make your own with fresh chicken, bread crumbs, spices and egg

  7. Flavoured coffee creamers - use real cream

  8. Canned refried beans - buy whole canned beans packed in water, rinse and mash or occasionally you can find a brand that doesn’t add any oil

  9. Boxed taco shells - buy frozen corn tortillas, rub with coconut oil and bake briefly on cookie sheet

  10. Pesto - make your own and freeze in ice cube trays
